On May 21, 1944, orders were given to unload ammunition from a small naval assault vessel (Landing Craft, Tank, Or LCT). There were nearly 36 LSTs that were to sail to the Marianas. They were resting side-by-side across a narrow channel from the West Loch Navy Ammunition Depot.
"We lived about 1 mile from West Loch and a block from the plantation hospital. Ambulances arrived and left all night long," says Ted Vorfeld.
