John Frederick Janssen (Fred) was born in Kahuku in 1908. He attended Kahuku Private Kindergarten, Kahuku Public Schools through the 6th grade, Central Intermediate School through the 8th grade, and St. Louis College (old school on College Walk) through 12th grade. He attended the University of Hawaii for two years, then dropped out.

Fred worked part time at the HSPA Experiment Station, then for Hawaiian Pine, and C. M. Cooke, Ltd.October 1, 1928 he became Office Boy at the Bank of Hawai, and worked various departments for the next ten years then was sent to Kauai as Assistant Manager of the Kauai branches. In 1946 BOH appointed him Manager of the Wahiawa and Waialua, Oahu offices, where he stayed until 2959. From then until 1967 he was Vice President, Kauai branches, and in late 1967 became Vice President Head Office Branch Divisions & Central Loan.

December 21, 1970, Fred retired.

Blessed with a beautiful wife, Edythe Ham Janssen, and two wonderful children, Jim and Marilyn, Fred was active in Rotary, the Masonic Lodge #5898, and Masonic Shrine Aloha Temple. He and Edy spent their last years with Ted and Marilyn Cleghorn on Maui. Fred died February 13, 1990, and Edy died December 16, 1997. He lived a full, joyful life and was loved and respected throughout Hawaii.
